Cpl. Vincent "Mal" Praktesh is an aidman for the 114th Parachute Regiment, 2nd Battalion, D Company, Second Platoon. He graduated medical school twice, and used to be a surgeon. He is a player character in the Quelmwar campaign.
Physical Appearance
Vince is a fairly unassuming person, aside from missing part of his small finger. He has a fairly average build, straight brown hair, and green eyes. He wears a fairly standard airborne soldier's outfit, adorned with a few symbols to let people know that he has their back if they ever get hurt.
Personality
His unit isn't the most stable, but he tries his best to disarm the harsher personalities with humor. He's fairly laid back most of the time, but if someone's starting shit, he has no problems shooting back.
Vince used to be a surgeon, and there's some baggage that comes with that. He thinks he's better than most people, but he keeps that much to himself. Might come up if one of them actually manages to break him though.
History
Vince grew up in a medical family and took to that trade. He went to college and then medical school, got good grades, and graduated with honors. Soon after, he found himself some work in a hospital. After an incident involving a rib cage, a bone saw, a missing finger, and several home calls to that day's patients, he found himself without a medical license. He made his way into the army to pay for his student loans. During his time, he met Finn, before they went to separate units. Then the war started.
The Galik Campaign
Given that he was already in the Noman military at the time, Vince was one of the first Nomans into the Galik campaign. He fought there from CR 46-48. The Noman government says in all of their official diplomatic channels that they didn't put boots on the ground until the siege, but that didn't stop a few soldiers from volunteering under other colors. Vince joined up with a foreign legion, and got to work.
In early CR 47, Vince was on a small section of the front was attacked heavily by Troverthian forces. His unit managed to beat them back. They saw the opportunity to counterattack, and they took it. Troverth had gotten complacent, and put a prisoner-of-war camp just a few miles behind their lines in the outskirts of a small town called Szallinie. They could see the Troverthian forces were still evacuating the camp when they first got eyes on it. They could see some of the retreating soldiers wearing Entente uniforms as they crested the hill.
The Szallinie Camp
When they got to the main area of the camp, it was an awful sight. There was starvation, disease, and plenty of evidence of prior torture. It had little in the way of shelter, with the prisoners often sleeping two to a cot. The prisoners were all skin and bones except for a few more recent arrivals. The food they received was often little more than scraps.
But perhaps the most peculiar part of the main camp was that the prisoners all initially tried to distance themselves from their liberators. One of the ones in the shelter, seeing that there were Entente soldiers at every exit, dropped to the fetal position, covering his head with his arms. One of them said, "Please. Please don't hurt us." The soldiers asked why they would hurt them, and received no response. And whenever they reassured them that they were only here to get them out of the camp, it didn't help. They wouldn't trust any of the food or water they were given. They panicked at the touch.
Eventually, after talking with the prisoners extensively, they learned that the people who ran the Szallinie camp made certain they wore the outfits of Entente soldiers whenever they were going to torture the prisoners, and wore their regular uniforms when they weren't going to hurt them. And if one of them made a grave error while in the presence of a guard wearing regulars, that guard would note the prisoner, leave, and send for one wearing Entente, and take them to the "Liberation Building."
